Bob & Diane Kordas play traditional instruments with updated arrangements and rhythms to old, new, and original bluegrass, swing, folk and roots music. They have released two recordings, "Midnight Airwaves" in 2001 and most current recording, "Bluegrass and Beyond" in 2008. "We enjoy playing a variety of music, I (Diane) love writing songs and taking old tunes and playing with chords and rhythms, really bringing standards to a new light. We draw from old time country, swing, and bluegrass, but not exclusively. Late Night Radio has evolved from being a trio in 2001, quartet in 2008. Now it's Bob on banjo or resophonic guitar and me playing guitar. We are paring it down and selecting songs that sound good as a duo, taking music to a simple sweet place and letting it go, letting the vocals and melodies really carry the song." Bob sums up the music, "I recall turning on a transistor radio in the wee hours of the morning, hiding it under my pillow so no one else would hear, and getting radio stations that played anything from Carter Family, to Patsy Cline, Woody Guthrie, and old time traditional tunes. That's the kind of sound that inspires Late Night Radio duo. Simple tunes for hard times." Diane Kordas & Late Night Radio are members of the NH State Council on the Arts Touring roster and the New England Foundation for the Arts. Click on their links for more information. Late Night Radio has performed at a variety of venues in the past, several have had us back for repeat appearances. Some of the places we played include the following: Past Performances: Many Old Home Days, Festivals, anniversaries, weddings and other events!! The Big E Northeastern states expo, Springfield, MA Reviews: "...they play an amalgam of styles that can be best described as bluegrass swing with major jazz overtones. Their combination of excellent instrumentation and vocals made for very easy listening. The arrangements of old blues, bluegrass and swing jazz standards revived tunes written before the rock era."
As a child, her family harmonized on bluegrass songs that her mother learned as a child growing up in Georgia. Cross that with the influence of her father's clarinet playing and Benny Goodman records, and you have an appreciation for the precursors to contemporary music. She would "borrow" her older brother's electric guitar and teach herself with the Bob Dylan song book. When he moved out, she was
given a cheap guitar by her parents, who thought it unlady-like for a girl to play a guitar seriously. This strengthened her resolve to pursue music the next chance she got.
Bob started playing his great grandfather's banjo when he was 20 years old. An early love of traditional music led to organizing the Weare Fiddle & Banjo Contest for 8 years. Bob has also competed at the Lowell Fiddle and Banjo Contest, placing twice. For the past several years, he has been playing the resophonic guitar also, commonly known as a Dobro or steel guitar.
